Rim Reader privacy policy

Effective 2026-10-09

Rim Reader is an app made by Middle TN Auto Repair LLC, a Tennessee limited liability company (“we”, “us”). This policy says what information the Rim Reader app and this website handle, and where it goes. It says what Section 9 of the app’s Terms of Use and Safety says, in more detail.

The short version

  • Your measurements, vehicles and settings stay on your phone. We do not collect them.
  • The app has no account and no login, and shows no ads.
  • The app sends us nothing unless you send us feedback.
  • Three things do leave the phone, described below: Google’s scanner software sends Google diagnostic information; a VIN lookup sends part of the VIN to a U.S. government database; and feedback you choose to send comes to us.

Information that stays on your phone

Rim Reader keeps your measurements, readings, vehicles, specs, calibrations and settings on your phone. When you share a result (for example a report or a file), it goes only where you send it. If your phone backs up its apps to your Google account, Android may include Rim Reader’s data in that backup; that backup is between you and Google.

If you use the shop features, the app also keeps the customer names and phone numbers, license plates and mileage you enter, and your shop’s name, logo, phone, website and technician name, on your phone. They print only on your shop’s reports. PDF reports you make are saved in your phone’s shared Download/Rim Reader folder, where other apps with access to your files can read them. They carry the VIN, and shop reports also carry the customer’s details. They stay there until you delete them, even if you uninstall the app.

The camera and the scanner

The app uses the camera only when you open a scanner: the VIN and tire-size scanner, or, with the shop features, the license plate reader. On Android the scanner uses Google’s ML Kit. The picture, the VIN, the tire size and the plate are read on your phone and are not sent to Google, and no picture is kept. ML Kit does send Google diagnostic and usage information about your phone and Rim Reader, such as an identifier for this installation of the app (not meant to identify you or your phone), the phone’s model and system version, the app’s name and version, and how the scanner performed, and it may download updates from Google. Google describes this at developers.google.com/ml-kit/android-data-disclosure. The app does not use the microphone.

Vehicle lookup (NHTSA)

When you enter or scan a VIN, the app asks the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s free vehicle database (vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov) for the vehicle’s model and details. It sends only the first 11 characters of the VIN, with the 9th hidden, and the model year, never the last six characters (the serial number that identifies your vehicle). NHTSA sees your phone’s internet address, as any website does, and NHTSA’s own privacy policy applies. Without a connection, you choose the model yourself.

Feedback you send us

When you send feedback from Settings, Send Feedback, the app sends us what it is about, your message, the email address you give, if any, and, unless you untick the box, the app’s version, your phone’s model and system version, whether the shop features are turned on (a setting on your phone, not an online account), the date of your bracket calibration and the bracket profile. The app never adds a VIN, a license plate, customer details, notes or readings, so please don’t type them into your message. Feedback goes to a Google Form we own, so Google keeps it for us and sees your phone’s internet address, and Google’s privacy policy also applies. We use feedback only to answer you and to improve Rim Reader, and we do not sell or share it. Email us to have your feedback deleted.

Installing the app and any purchases

Google Play’s own terms and privacy policy apply to buying and installing the app. We do not receive your payment details.

This website

This website has no cookies, no analytics and no tracking, and it asks you for nothing. If you use the light/dark switch, your choice is saved in your own browser and never sent to us. The site is hosted by GitHub Pages, which, like any web host, receives your internet address when you visit; GitHub’s privacy statement applies to that. If you email us, we use your message only to answer you.

Children

Rim Reader is for people 18 and older, and we do not knowingly collect information from children.

Changes

If what the app does with information changes, we will update this page and its date, and the app’s terms will change with it.
