Back up and restore
Rim Reader has no account and keeps everything on your phone. A backup file is how your vehicles and readings survive a lost or replaced phone. Open Settings → Back Up and Restore.
Back up
Tap Back Up and choose where to keep the file, such as Google Drive or your phone’s Downloads. It holds your vehicles, readings, notes and settings, and your shop’s details and logo if you entered them.
It doesn’t hold your plan or purchases, which come back from the store, or the PDFs, which the app makes again from your readings.
The file holds your VINs and any customer names, phones and license plates, so keep it somewhere private. Rim Reader sends it nowhere: it goes only where you save it.
Restore on a new phone
- Install Rim Reader and accept the Terms.
- Settings → Back Up and Restore → Restore, and choose the file.
- The app checks the file, then says what it will replace. Tap Restore, or Back Up First to save this phone’s data before it is replaced.
- Calibrate the new phone. The bracket calibration belongs to the phone it was made on, so it isn’t restored. Bracket Calibration
- Vehicles beyond your plan’s places come back read-only: their readings are all there, but they can’t be measured until your plan has room.
- A damaged file, or one from a newer version of the app, is refused and nothing changes. If a restore fails part-way, your phone’s data is put back as it was.
The file
A standard ZIP of the app’s own files, which any computer can open. Nothing in it is specific to Android, so the same file will restore on the iPhone version. Every later version of the app restores every earlier backup.
