Vehicles and specs
The garage keeps your vehicles and the specs each is checked against. Open it with Select Vehicle or Settings → Garage & History. Adding a vehicle is optional: without one, results are checked against the generic targets.
Add a vehicle
- Name (optional) and VIN (optional, with a scan button).
- Year, Make, Model: pick the year first, then the make, then the model. The lists come from the US government’s vehicle database, built into the app, from 1981 to 2027. If yours is missing, choose Other (type it).
- Tire size in three boxes, such as 235 / 55 / 17, with a camera button.
- Show Toe In: Degrees, Degrees and Minutes, mm or inches. For mm or inches, say where your spec sheet measures toe: at the tire or at the rim. Camber and thrust are always in degrees.
- Spec source and Notes.
The first vehicle you add is the one in use. Tap a vehicle’s box to use it; it says In use. Each box has History, Edit and Delete buttons.
Specs
Each vehicle has a Spec source:
- Generic
- The default: targets for a typical street car, labelled everywhere as not your car’s factory specs. It also asks for the Rear suspension: Independent or Solid. With Solid, rear camber and rear toe are shown but not checked.
- Manual
- Type your spec sheet’s numbers, from your vehicle’s service information or a shop’s alignment printout, as preferred ± tolerance, or minimum and maximum. Toe-in is +, camber leaning in at the top is −. Enter total or each-wheel toe; the app works out the other and warns if they disagree. Degrees and minutes can be typed as
-0°30′,-0 30or-0.5. - Factory specs
- Built-in factory specs are coming soon.
The generic targets
Deliberately tighter than most factory tolerances, and checked against published factory figures for common cars. Change them in Settings → Generic Alignment Targets, or Reset to Default; saved readings are checked again against the new numbers. Vehicles over 10,000 lb are told to use the maker’s specs.
| Angle | Min | Max |
|---|---|---|
| Front total toe | 0.00° | 0.20° |
| Front toe, each wheel | 0.00° | 0.10° |
| Front camber | −1.00° | 0.00° |
| Front cross camber | ±0.50° | |
| Rear camber | −1.50° | −0.50° |
| Rear cross camber | ±0.50° | |
| Rear total toe | 0.00° | 0.30° |
| Rear toe, each wheel | 0.00° | 0.15° |
| Thrust angle | ±0.15° | |
Thrust angle: within 0.10° the app calls it straight; the ±0.15° here is the pass mark for the spec check.
Scan the VIN
Point the camera at the barcode or printed VIN on the driver’s door-jamb label, or at the VIN at the bottom of the windshield, through the glass. Hold the phone upright. In a dark door jamb use the light; at the windshield leave it off. The scanner reads whichever it finds first and closes by itself.
- It fills Year and Make from the VIN itself, offline. The Model and details come a moment later from the US government’s free vehicle database when you’re online. Offline, pick the model yourself.
- Only part of the VIN is sent, never its serial number. Privacy
- It refuses a barcode that isn’t a VIN, or a VIN whose check digit doesn’t match. You can always type it.
- The VIN identifies the vehicle. It doesn’t give alignment specs.
Scan the tire size
Point the camera at the tire label in the driver’s door jamb. It fills the three boxes with the front tire’s size, never the spare’s. A tire size is needed to show toe in mm or inches. Flotation sizes such as 31x10.50R15LT can’t be entered, so toe on those tires shows in degrees.
